The Bo Y marriage involves several steps. First, a
pair of female matchmakers are sent by the boy's family to ask the girl's
family for her biographical information, such as date of birth. This
is used to determine if the match would be propitious. The girl's
family, if they are agreeable, will give 10 red-colored chicken eggs.
If the calculations seem favorible, two men will be sent to the girl's
family to do a full reading of the horoscope, and conduct negotiations for
the bride-price that will be paid by the boy's family. An engagement
ceremony is then conducted. Finally the wedding, itself, is performed. |
 | A Bo Y wedding begins when a delegation of 8-10 people are
sent by the groom's family to meet the bride. They bring presents to
the bride's family, which usually includes food and some clothes for the
bride. They bring a horse that
the bride must ride to the place of the wedding ceremony. The bride
brings a pair of scissors and a hen from her parent's house. On the
way she stops to use the scissors to release the hen on the road. The
release of the hen symbolizes her release from her old life and the
beginning of a new set of relationships.
