Bo Y People

The hearts and minds of the Bo Y are held captive by a polytheistic religion.  They hold to a complicated set of religious beliefs derived from a mixture of Buddhism, Daoism, animism, Confucianism, polytheism and ancestor worship.  They have many superstitions, as revealed by their many rituals and ceremonies.  The Bo Y worship a pantheon of spirits, including the spirit of heaven, the earth, the mountains and the soil.  A specific spirit deity that they honor is Ha Ba, the emperor of the waters.  They also revere many other specific spirit entities such as the spirit of fire, water, rivers and forests.

They also practice an ancient form of exorcism which involves hiring a shaman to cast demonic spirits out of a home or other living area.  This practice is called Nuo.

The Bo Y in Vietnam are an unreached people group.  They have no access to the gospel.  In China there are about 5,000 Bo Y Catholics.  Even though the combined Bo Y population of China and Vietnam is about three million people, there are no Scriptures, Jesus film, Gospel recordings or any other evangelistic tool available in their language.  There was a Gospel of Matthew translated into Bouyei in 1906, but this translation is now obsolete.
