The Giay speak a Tay-Thai
(Tai - Kadai) language, of the Daic language group. Specifically, it is in
the northern Tai branch of the language family. The language is
basically the same as that spoken by the Bo Y (Bouyei), though the two groups
are considered distinct for other cultural reasons. Their language is a completely different language group from Vietnamese,
which is of the Mon-Khmer group.
The language is sometimes called Nhang.
It is closely related to the Tay, Thai, Nung and San Chay
languages,
linguistically, though they are not mutually intelligible.
