  Indigo Dress               Male Costume

10/22/2003

La Chi women traditionally wear indigo trousers, though some prefer skirts like the Tay women. Their long gowns may be buttoned in front and at the middle. They also wear a beautifully embroidered breast cloth.  Some groups wear the more traditional four-paneled buttonless dress. These indigo dresses overlap in front and are held in place by an indigo belt that is tied so that the ends fall to the knees.  When wearing buttonless clothing, the La Chi women, for modesty's sake, wear a sort of bra undergarment, edged with a band of colored cloth.  The hems of the dress are also edged with colored cloth which stands out against the indigo fabric.  Women carry baskets by means of a strap that passes over the forehead.  Men carry with shoulder straps.

La Chi men may wear clothing similar to the Viet.  But many wear the traditional wide trousers, with a robe worn over them.  The robe buttons on the left side and falls to the knees.  Men of some sub-groups wear their hair long and cover it with a turban, made of cloth wound repeatedly about the head.   For everyday wear, an indigo tunic, reaching to mid thigh, is often worn over blue or indigo trousers.
