Who are the Ngai? The
Ngai comprise one of the smallest of Vietnam’s 53 minority groups
with an estimated population of 1,430. There are five subgroups,
made up
of three tiny Chinese-speaking communities. Their name is
derived from San Ngai, which means "mountaineers". Some do live
in the mountains, but one famous subgroup, the Dan, are the boat people of
Vietnam and southern China. A 1972 study estimated that over three
million Dan people were in China, living along the coasts of Guangdong and
Guangxi provinces and Hainan Island. There are also about
50,000 Dan that live in Hong Kong (as of the 1980's). Ngai people of the
Dan subgroup live in several other SE Asian countries (e.g. Macau), as well.
The pronunciation of their name is "Nai" .
They are also known as: San Ngai, Dan, Danjia, Tanka, Xumin, Soisangyan, Ngai
Hac Ca, Lau Man, He, Sin and Le.
The Vietnamese Ngai are a completely unreached
people group.
