The costume of the San Chay often resembles the Tay, or other ethnic
neighbors. In many areas, it is the elderly women who maintain the more
traditional San Chay dress. It was characterized by a five-paneled dress
with embroidered collar. Eight-pointed stars and horizonal lines were
common motifs. Skirts were commonly long and dyed with indigo.
Dresses for formal occasions are still highly embroidered and decorated at the
waist with silk cords of various colors. Often a belt is added, knotted
at the front so that the ends fall to the knees. For ordinary attire,
San Chay women wear a woven belt with a sheathed knife attached.
